First Japan - UK Conference in the UK |
On the 19th and 20th January, 2006, one year after the
World Conference on Disaster Reduction at Kobe, Japanese and UK
academics came together to address disaster risk reduction and education
challenges faced by the two countries. The two day seminar titled First
Japan –UK Seminar on Disaster Risk Management Theme: Practice and
Education was jointly run by Disaster and Development Centre,
Northumbria University and Disaster Prevention Research Institute
(DPRI), Kyoto University. Councillor Mr. John Shipley, head of policy
and planning department at Newcastle City Council, inaugurated the
seminar in the presence of First Secretary of Japanese Embassy Mr
Nobuhiko Tanizawa and Mr. Fumio Matsunaga, Director General of the Japan
Foundation, London office. Mr.Tanizawa addressed as a guest of honour
and Mr.Fumio gave opening remarks. The seminar concluded that the
management of hazards might be beyond our capacity but that reduced
human vulnerability to them is achievable by involving local people and
practitioners in sharing information. Practice based education within
which learning by doing and implementation science combines ongoing
evaluation of policy and practice was seen as a key way forward.
Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor Mr David Slesenger to honour Japanese
Guests at his office hosted a reception.
